Lip Balm in Ramadan; Using Lip Balm in Ramadan
The use of neutral lip balms during Ramadan. (Ie unflavoured and unscented)…..
It is permissible to apply such balms and moisturisers to the exterior of the lips while fasting. Care must be taken to ensure non of it is ingested, through licking of lips and so on. If you can’t avoid the habit of licking lips or fear ingestion then do not use.
Just to clarify below
There is nothing wrong with a person using ointment to moisturise the lips or nose, or moistening them with water, or with a cloth and the like, but he should avoid anything that could reach the throat. But if anything reaches the throat without him intending it to, there is no sin on him, just as if he rinses his mouth and some water reaches his throat by accident, his fast is not invalidated by that.
There is nothing wrong with applying creams to the body while fasting if there is a need for that, because the cream only reaches the surface of the skin and does not enter the body. Even if it is absorbed by the pores it is not regarded as breaking the fast.
“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you in order that you might learn piety . . . . The month of Ramadan is that wherein was revealed the Qur’an, as a guidance to mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion. So, whoever among you witnesses the month should fast.” [Al-Qur’an 2:183, 185]
“Every deed of the Son of Adam is for himself, except fasting – it is for Me, and I shall reward it.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]
