In today’s world Muslims have earned themselves labels such fraudster, liar, thief because we have lost our connection to the perfection of character Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم

The world used to look at the Muslim and think what a brilliant person, I want to be just like him/her and through this they would enter Islam.

Unfortunately the opposite is happening in today’s world, Muslims are looked at in despise, with hatred in peoples hearts. And it’s not just US government, or the British who are to blame, it is us. We have lost touch with our own religion. Muslims look at the behaviour of other Muslims and get turned away from Islam then what hope to the non-Muslims have of turning to Islam. My brothers and sisters, the onus is on us to present Islam in the best light. That doesn’t necessary mean that we go knocking on people’s doors but that we make ourselves role models for the people. So once again people look at the Muslims and think what great people I want to join them.
Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم have given us many lessons on how to perfect human character and I will try to present a few to you, so that we can take in the lessons from these ahadith and become better Muslims.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “One who covers up the failings of someone in this world will have his shortcomings covered up by God on the Day of Judgment.” – Riyadh us-Saleheen, 240

Instead of covering we are the ones who are exposing them and many times it is based on rumours that simply aren’t true. Backbiting and slander we are the top of the ladder. We are eating the flesh of our own Muslim brothers and sisters and then we complain about indigestion!!!

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “By his good character, a believer will attain the degree of one who prays during the night and fasts during the day.” – Abu Dawood, Hadith 2233

The above shows the impact of having good character that it will be like he prays during the night and fast during the day because so many people are copying him and he is getting the reward amongst other things of people imitating him and keeping the sunnah of Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم alive.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “(God) has revealed to me that you should adopt humility so that no one oppresses another.” – Riyadh-us-Salaheen, Hadith 1589

How many of us can really claim that we are humble people and nor oppressors. This oppression can be as simple as taking the mick out of your mates, making them feel uncomfortable in your presence.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “No one has swallowed anything more excellent in the sight of God…than the anger he restrains, seeking to please God most high.” Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1324

How many divorces do we see in today’s age simply because the man could not control his anger!!! Why do our children grow up saying big Punjabi/urdu swears that they don’t know the meaning of.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Envy is not permitted except in two cases: (Envy) of a person who God has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and (envy of) a person who God has given wisdom and he gives his decisions accordingly and teaches it to others.” – Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadith 490

We must stop comparing our clothes, our cars and our houses with those who are more wealthy and we should start comparing our deeds with those who are more pious and ask ourselves what is so special about that person, why cant I also wake up for Fajr salah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever suffers an injury and forgives (the person responsible), God will raise his status to a higher degree and remove one of his sins.” Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 998

How many of us have not spoken to our family members for years regarding an argument whose root cause has been forgotten. Remember if you forgive someone then Allah ﷻ will forgive.

May Allah ﷻ give us the strength to adopt as many sunnah’s as possible so that we can have the best of characters amongst the people.
